Equine euthanasia continues to be a critical component of practice. The potential challenges to access to Pentobarbital, the environmental ramifications of Pentobarbital use, and carcass management require veterinarians to consider alternatives to historically common euthanasia techniques. This topic will review alternative methods of achieving euthanasia including intrathecal lidocaine, IV potassium chloride, IV magnesium sulfate, and firearms. While all discussed techniques are AVMA approved this presentation will focus on the protocol for Intrathecal Lidocaine. Review of anatomy and considerations of proper technique for firearm utilization will also be examined.
