The scope of what humans regard as “companion animals” has been rapidly expanding beyond dogs and cats. Species like birds, reptiles, fish, and small mammals are more commonly being recognized as important family members by their caretakers. As general medical care for these species becomes more available, they are living longer, and the demand for their veterinary care has been increasing.

This has led to more chronic illnesses being recognized in these species and an increasing need for advanced medical treatment, which includes comprehensive hospice and end of life care. This presentation will outline clinical cases as a framework to discuss hospice treatment and end-of-life care for species beyond dogs and cats. After this discussion, clinicians should feel empowered to provide care to a more diverse group of families.
