From our 2025 Conference, Join Dr. Rudloff for: End of Life Care in the ER and ICU.
In the emergency and critical care field, the veterinary team is faced with situations where life and death decisions and discussions must happen in a rapid and concise manner to positively affect outcome and be able to move on to the next pet in crisis. Whereby we might equate a positive outcome solely with a life being saved, a positive outcome also includes enabling a gentle death in a manner that is in line with the family’s belief system. Although a gentle death may be thought of only as giving euthanasia solution IV, it is narrow-minded to think that the technique requires placement of an IV catheter to give the medication, that the pet must be separated from the family to place that IV catheter, or to think that there is no option other than euthanasia when death is imminent. Techniques for euthanasia are plentiful, allowing us to tailor the end-of-life experience for the caregivers. In addition, hospice-supported and assisted natural death is a viable treatment option for providing a good death. It is time for the topic of end-of-life care in the ER/ICU to become as important as how to perform life-saving procedures.
